Welcome to the weird mind of David Redl, capable computer scientist, sometimes ScrumMaster, and aspiring author.
I am passionate about stories and started this blog to share my experiences with the written word as a reader and, hopefully someday, an author.
My family and I are blessed to live and work on Treaty 7 land in Alberta, Canada.

One of my favourite things about visiting family is getting to play with my many nieces and nephews or reading them stories. I’m always on the hunt for age-appropriate stories for them to learn to read on their own or for their parents to read to them. I prefer to go with quirkier stories with a good message so I was very grateful to find author Jocelyn Watkinson’s brand-new picture book, The Three Canadian Pigs.
The Three Canadian Pigs isn’t just a retelling of the classic Three Pigs story, even if it starts out feeling familiar. This is a story filled to the brim with Canadian spirit including our love of hockey, our local cuisine, and our friendly and welcoming spirit. The big bad wolf may start out wanting to eat the pigs and getting ready to huff and puff down their snow fort, but what follows is an endearing story of overcoming differences through friendly competition and bonding over a shared love of game and food.
Illustrator Marcus Cutler scored with his usual funny art style and author Jocelyn Watkinson wowed with clever rhymes, witty banter, and a wholesome message. I’m really looking forward to my first chance to read this to a niece or nephew and recommend it for all the children in your life, Canadian or no.
